Capitol Kids is Closed

Capitol Kids closed on Saturday August 11th.  Below is the letter we sent announcing our closing.  Thanks for all the good wishes and memories you have shared.  We had great visits, even from young  adults we knew as  babies.  We also had special treats delivered.  So many people cried!  Thanks for helping us clear the shelves.

Please remember to think local first!  Shop locally whenever you can. It’s important.

Dear friends and customers,

Eighteen years.  That’s how long Capitol Kids has been around.  It’s been a great run, but now, it’s time for Capitol Kids to close.   Lots of things have contributed to this decision and we have considered many options. But frankly, sales have been lagging for quite a while.  We still have lots of customers, but the economic climate, the toy and clothing industries and our customer’s shopping patterns have changed and we just can’t afford our expenses anymore.
Over the years, we’ve known lots of babies who are now young adults.   We’ve congratulated new parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents.  We’ve curated a wonderful selection of high play value toys and beautiful clothing for babies and kids. We have held events, raised money for great causes and given away thousands of free balloons.  We have won awards.  And for all that, we have to thank Downtown Madison Incorporated, Dane Buy Local, ASTRA, our vendors, sales representatives, customers, supporters and friends.
We have had the most extraordinary staff people.   It’s hard to believe that 119 fun, loving, imaginative and dedicated people have worked at Capitol Kids, many for a very long time.   And so many of them are still connected to us and to each other.

I am so grateful to my daughter Jenna who helped me realize my dream.  I am full of gratitude to all of you.  And I am looking forward to retiring.
